COMFORTABLE WIN FOR PENYBONT LADIES
Victory at Caerphilly Castle
PUBLISHED: 26th Sep 16

Caerphilly Castle Ladies 2 Penybont 7

Welsh Women's League

Penybont started the game with a number of changes due to regulars being out with injury or attending weddings in the East.

Rachel Price making her first start sent the ladies on their way winning an early battle for the ball and putting Rebecca Struthers in to curl the ball into the top left of the goal from the edge of the box. One-nil with two minutes gone became two-nil five minutes later when Shorna Davies dropped an inch perfect cross to Gemma Harris who crashed the ball home.

Less than 10 minutes had gone when another first starter Emily Jones lobbed the keeper with a bicycle kick to make it three.

With Penybont overrunning the home side Emily Jones tried another volley which went high. Jones had to leave the field after 30 minutes and equally hungry Connie Milton came on.

Hannah Whittingham bossed he midfield alongside Price and Struthers with Daisy Stoakes continually making space on the left.

Some good moves through the middle saw Gemma Harris felled in the box and she brushed herself down to put the spot kick home

The defence repelled anything that Caerphilly could muster and stand in keeper Sara Jones had little to do.

The second half continued in the same theme and Shona Davies was unlucky not to score from her flick after Stoakes put her in.

Caerphilly did have something to hit back with and their busy winger latched onto a momentary lapse to pull one back.

The game was held up for an injury to the Caerphilly keeper and shots from Milton and Shorna Davies showed it wasn’t over yet.

On the hour mark Connie Milton charged down a clearance and stabbed the  ball home to make it five, and just after Ria Coates free kick flew just over the bar Shorna Davies latched on to a Sara Jones clearance and danced around four bewildered defenders before tucking home.

Abbie Ralph and Katy Sinclair entered the fray and gave the team some fresh legs in the afternoon heat.

Another break saw Connie Milton run clear to bag her second and make it seven.

Caerphilly popped up with a consolation at the death but an excellent result for the ladies.
