On Saturday the 21st of July, we travelled West to Goodwick United. Their Phoenix Park ground is situated right on the front of Fishguard Harbour and is a very picturesque setting.
Penybont arrived with a mixed squad due to some injuries after Weds game and Manager Rhys Griffiths and his trusty Assistant Martyn Giles brought in a couple of youngsters who they wanted to look at ready for the new season.
Penybont started on the front foot and were playing with a good tempo. Penybont took the lead after a cross from the right was met by Luke Borrelli with a great header but it thudded against the post and the rebound was smashed in by one of our exciting youngsters Liam Williams to give the visitors the lead.
Goodwick grabbed an equaliser soon after as a corner from the right was met by Lee Huggell’s head and beat Rhys Wilson in the away goal. This brought about a great 10 minutes of play for the hosts and they soon took the lead after an excellent goal with some great interplay by the strikers and Jordan Griffiths drove the ball home to give the hosts the lead.
Penybont grabbed an equaliser just before half time as a corner from Kane Owen was met by the head of another exciting youngster in the form of Mackenzie Kay as the centre half powered the ball home. WPL referee, Tom Bevan then brought the opening half to a close.
Goodwick Utd 2 – 2 Penybont FC
The 2nd half saw Penybont go through the gears and Joe Hopkins restored Penybont’s lead with a great run and finish to make it 3 – 2 to the visitors. Liam Williams scored the next goal as he burst through the middle to claim his 2nd and Penybont’s 4th before Kieran Howard scored the 5th goal for Penybont to cap a good game for the visitors.
Goodwick Utd played their part in a back and fore game and are a strong side and we wish them well for the new season and thank them for their hospitality and welcome in another great workout for our team.
